Bowel Cancer New Zealand is a small, under-funded organisation fighting New Zealand's most common cancer. Despite bowel cancer killing more than 100 people a month there is very low awareness of the disease and the organisation.
To make a difference we needed to start by refreshing the brand, moving it away from the lazy humour of past communications and introduce a more approachable symbol - the humble chair.
After all chairs come in all shapes and sizes, just like the New Zealanders affected by bowel cancer. It became a bit of a passion project for me. I scoured flea markets and the internet for interesting chairs, and then got sanding to turn them into blank canvases with which we could approach some of the country's most prominent artists.
We launched with an engaging awareness campaign and art auction. 11 art chairs were shown at a gallery and gala event before being successfully auctioned online. It not only provided Bowel Cancer New Zealand with much needed funds, but helped to start conversations and engage people with their mission.
